Description

Metamask is a browser plugin and smartphone app that allows easy and secure access and interaction with decentralized applications ("Dapps") running on the Ethereum Blockchain. A central component of Metamask is also an Ethereum and ERC-20 wallet, which is used to interact with Dapps and pay gas fees. The interaction with Dapps is implemented via the Ethereum web3 API and Javascript. Metamask can also be used with hardware wallets such as the Trezor or Ledger and additionally supports ERC-271 tokens. Since October 2020, Metamask includes a token swap feature, which allows direct exchange between different ERC-20 tokens with automatic integration of various decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap.

About the project

Behind the project stands a global team of developers lead by founder Aaron Davis and lead developer Dan Finlay, the community and the New York-based company ConsenSys Inc. with offices around the world. Behind ConsenSys Inc. is Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin. The development of the project can be followed at Github.

Usability

The handling of Metamask is mostly intuitive, even if some features that are new at first usage are implemented. However, the concepts specialized for Dapps quickly reveal their usefulness and allow a very comfortable operation.
